Securitisation in a post-crisis context

Securitisation in a post-crisis context

The European Commission has proposed new legislative measures to promote a safe and liquid EU market for securitisation, with the new rules due to take effect soon.

If it is structured soundly, securitisation is an important channel for diversifying funding within the economy, for broadening the distribution of risk and for allowing banks to free capital.

However, since securitisation products played a significant role in the US subprime mortgage crisis beginning in 2007, European securitisation markets have remained subdued. The slow recovery of these markets reflects concerns among investors and prudential supervisors about the risks associated with the securitisation process itself.

It is estimated that if EU securitisation issuance was built up again to pre-crisis average, it would generate between €100-150bn in additional funding for the economy. In light of this, the European Commission has decided to join other global institutions in reforming the current law to prevent high risk.

Given the continued importance attached to securitisation, being up-to-date with the market remains of high relevance. The ICMA Securitisation - An Introduction course gives you the tools to understand exactly what securitisation is and how such deals are structured, .
